Tips on where to go
There is always something happening in Heidelberg. Whatever time of year, the calendar of events is brimming over with exciting things to do and places to go.
Spring: The start of an eventful year is marked by the Heidelberg Spring international music festival, followed by the Heidelberger Stückemarkt contemporary drama festival run by Theater und Orchester Heidelberg.
Summer: Visitors to Heidelberg Castle Festival can enjoy open-air theater performances and concerts against a backdrop of Germany’s most famous castle ruins. And the Castle Illuminations, which take place several times over the summer months, offer a breathtaking firework display commemorating a historical event that celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2013 – the wedding of Friedrich V of Wittelsbach to Elisabeth Stuart, daughter of the English king.
Fall: On the last saturday of September the city is transformed into a colorful sea of stages and booths for the Heidelberg Fall Festival – the popular street fair that takes place in the heart of the Old Town.
Winter: The year is rounded off in December by Heidelberg Christmas Market. Some 140 stalls and booths draw the people of Heidelberg – and thousands of international visitors – to the historic Old Town.
