The European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life ("EU Charter") is a framework for action aimed at increasing and promoting equal access for all people to the resources of society. With their signature the local and regional governments commit themselves to the principle of equality between women and men and to establishing an action plan on gender equality, setting concrete targets and defining measures for implementing gender equality. The City of Heidelberg signed the EU Charter for Equality in 2007.

General Information on the EU Charter

Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR)

Within the framework of a project that was financially supported by the EU Commission, the European CEMR elaborated a "European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in local and regional life" that was approved by the commissions of the European CEMR. The German association is part of the CEMR. It consists of 800 German towns, municipalities and rural districts, together with 54 further national local government associations from 40 European countries.
