Apply for an EU Pet Passport

The pet passport is a travel document required for pet travel within the European Union (EU) for cats, dogs and ferrets.

It contains, among other things, the following information:

  • Owner of the animal
  • Description of the animal
  • Identification of the animal (type and date of identification and identification number)
  • Rabies vaccination (validity)
  • Confirmation of a sufficient test result of the titration of rabies antibodies
as proof of the effectiveness of the rabies vaccination, if travel to non-listed third countries is intended
  • further vaccinations or treatments, for example against echinococci

Even if you do not plan to travel with your pet, you can have a pet passport issued, as all vaccinations can also be entered there and thus a separate vaccination certificate is no longer necessary.

Notes:

  • Since 29 December 2014, only pet passports that comply with the new requirements of the Implementing Regulation (EU) No 577/2013 may be used for the first issue.
  • The "old" pet passports issued before 29 December 2014 according to the model of Decision 2003/803/EC remain valid.
  • Only authorised veterinarians may issue pet passports.

Note: As a rule, all veterinarians in private practice in Baden-Württemberg are authorised to issue pet passports.

Details

Prerequisite

Animals for which a pet passport is to be issued must be marked with a microchip.

Procedure

Before the pet passport can be issued, the veterinarian must clearly identify the animal. If there is no identification yet, the vet will do this and issue the pet passport.

The identification of a pet animal must be done by inserting a transponder. Tattoos carried out before 3 July 2011 that are still clearly legible remain valid.

Identification by transponder must be carried out before the pet passport is issued. At present, identification by transponder is reserved for the authorised veterinarian when issuing a pet passport

In the new pet passport, the pet owner must confirm the
pet owner data by signature when it is issued for the first time. The contact details of the authorised veterinarian,
who issued the pet passport, are also included. The animal's identification details
are secured by lamination in the new pet passport.

Note: In the new EU pet passport, the veterinarian can also transfer the already existing vaccinations.
