Apply for a student visa
If you want to study in Germany, you need a visa before entering the country.
This does not apply to:
- Nationals of the member states of the European Union (EU) and the EEA states
- Nationals of Switzerland
- Nationals of Andorra, Australia, Brazil, El Salvador, Great Britain and Northern Ireland (in the sense of § 1 Para. 2 No. 6 Freedom of Movement Act/EU), Honduras, Israel, Japan, Canada, the Republic of Korea, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino and the USA
As a rule, you will receive a visa with a validity period of 90 days. After arriving in Germany, you must register with the Residents' Registration Office of your new place of residence within 14 days.
Nationals of Andorra, Australia, Brazil, El Salvador, Great Britain and Northern Ireland (within the meaning of § 1 Para. 2 No. 6 Freedom of Movement Act/EU), Honduras, Israel, Japan, Canada, the Republic of Korea, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino and the USA must apply for a residence permit for students from states outside the EU/EEA before 90 days have elapsed.
Responsible department
The German mission abroad (embassy, consulate) in whose district the applicant usually resides or has his or her place of residence.

Prerequisite
- Study at
- a state or state-recognised higher education institution (university, teacher training college, art college, university of applied sciences) or
- a comparable training institution (e.g. Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (formerly: University of Cooperative Education)).
- The studies must be the main purpose of the stay.
This includes all training phases:- Language course or preparatory course Preparation for studies
- Language examination
- internships preparing for studies (if recommended or required by the university)
- Studies (basic studies, main studies, study-related internships, intermediate and final examinations)
- Postgraduate, additional or supplementary studies or doctoral studies
- practical activities following a course of study, insofar as they are a prescribed part of the course of study

The relevant minimum amounts are published annually by the Federal Ministry of the Interior in the Federal Gazette. - Health insurance in Germany

- Fulfilment of the requirements for access to the desired educational institution.
The general school requirements for access to the desired educational institution cannot be made up in the Federal territory.
Procedure
You must apply for the residence title (visa, residence permit) that applies to you using the relevant form.
You can obtain visa application forms free of charge from the competent diplomatic mission or consular post in the local language version. They are also available for download, depending on the offer of the respective mission abroad.
For other residence titles, you can obtain the necessary forms from the foreigners authority of the place where you registered your residence after entering Germany. Details on the respective procedure can be found in the procedure descriptions listed above.
You must submit the visa application in person. The diplomatic mission or consular post abroad will obtain the approval of the foreigners authority at your future place of residence in Germany. After approval, the mission abroad can issue the visa allowing entry and temporary residence.

Please note that you must apply for a residence permit before your visa expires.

- Proof of financing (e.g. statement of parents' income and financial circumstances, payment of a security deposit into a blocked account in Germany, scholarship contract)
