Areas of Responsibility

Structure and Offers

The Municipal School of Music and Singing of the City of Heidelberg presently teaches 3,100 pupils in 1,800 lessons per week covering a total of 4,100 subjects. Education at the Municipal School of Music and Singing follows the curriculum of the Association of German Music Schools (Verband deutscher Musikschulen – VdM) at preschool level (children from 1 year on, early musical education from 4 years on and elementary level from 6 years on), as well as instrumental and singing education at all other ages and levels.

The Municipal School of Music and Singing offers lessons for all orchestral instruments as well as for electric guitar and classical guitar, recorder, piano and for rarer instruments such as viola da gamba and harpsichord; it has special courses for beginners and provides lessons in numerous supplementary subjects.

With its many orchestras, ensembles and chamber music groups, the Municipal School of Music and Singing promotes musical ensemble playing and mutual cooperation to a high degree.
The quality of the teaching can be seen at some 150 events with a total of 1,400 participants and an audience of 11,750. Numerous outstanding results of Heidelberg music pupils at the competition “Young people make music” (“Jugend musiziert”) and other music competitions for young people show that the Municipal School of Music and Singing is also successfully teaching at the highest level of musical performances.
