Outstanding research through partnership
The medicine of tomorrow. Thanks to the high concentration of businesses and research establishments in Heidelberg and the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region, the region can offer a strong biotechnology sector. The Biotech Cluster Rhine-Neckar (BioRN), for example, has some 200 members who collaborate on researching and developing new drugs, diagnostic products and technology platforms. The cluster's particular focus is on personalized medicine and cancer research. Its members include biotechnology, pharmaceutical and healthcare companies, academic research and teaching bodies, product suppliers, sector-specific service providers, local authorities, industrial bodies and investors.
Recognition from the state. The cluster was one of five to receive an award in the Germany-wide Leading-Edge Cluster Competition held in 2008 and run by the German Ministry of Education and Research. Therefore, it received 40 million euros of funding until 2013. Altogether, 38 clusters from across the country entered the first round of the competition.
Organic electronics – a next-generation technology. Another group from the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region also received an award in the Leading-Edge Cluster Competition in 2008 – the Forum Organic Electronics. The Forum is a network of major international corporations, SMEs, research institutions and universities collaborating on the development of cutting-edge products, such as organic solar cell films and light-emitting diodes, which are considerably more efficient and sustainable than existing technologies.
