A full agenda of special events throughout the year means there is little risk of the people of Heidelberg and their guests ever being bored.
SAS Half Marathon: This major sporting event is extremely popular – and not just amongst the runners themselves. The many spectators lining the varied and demanding-mile course on 22th April 2018 guaranteed a festival atmosphere.
Heidelberg Wheelchair Marathon: This biennial international sporting event has taken place in Heidelberg for more than 20 years. On 2019 the city will once again welcome wheelchair athletes for what promises to be an exciting race.
HeidelbergMan (Triathlon): July 29st, 2018 is an important date for Heidelberg endurance athletes. Every year, hundreds of them set off on an arduous sequence of swimming, cycling and running against a breath-taking urban backdrop.
Heidelberg Fall: On September 29th and 30th, 2018 the squares and public places in Heidelberg Old City will fill with people eating, drinking and listening to live music performances. The annual Heidelberg Fall Festival draws visitors from all over the world.
Heidelberg Castle Illumination and Fireworks: Several times every year, the Castle Ruin is bathed in red light in memory of the two fires of 1689 and 1693. The spectacle is combined with a spectacular firework display over the River Neckar. The Castle Illumination in 2018 takes place on 2nd June, 24th July and 1st September, at around 10:00 pm.
Heidelberg Christmas Market: The year’s calendar of events in Heidelberg ends with the Christmas Market, which runs from 27st November to 22nd December 2017. Around 140 stalls and booths in the historic Old City act as a magnet for thousands of international visitors. An additional attraction is the Open-Air Ice Rink, which is open until January. Against a romantic backdrop of the Castle, locals and visitors can glide around the ice to an accompaniment of suitably festive music.
