Music, theatre, film and more

Heidelberg offers a wide range of festivals to delight fans of music, theatre, film and literature.

Winter festivals in January/February

Winter in Schwetzingen: The popular baroque festival takes place from November 2019 to January 2020.  As always, the "Rokoko Theater" of the Schwetzingen Castle provides a stylish setting for the festival. 

Carambolage: The cabaret festival in Heidelberg’s Karlstorbahnhof train station offers satirical cabaret, musical interludes and readings. In 2020 the festival will take place from January to February.

The Heidelberg String Quartett Festival takes place in January 2020 as a special highlight of the "Heidelberg Spring" International Music Festival. In addition to daily concerts, several workshops will be offered.

Dance Biennial Heidelberg: In February and March 2020 the Dance Biennial offers an extensive program with either guest performances and in-house productions and gives a variety of insights into current developments in the national and international dance scene.

Spring festivals

Heidelberger Frühling International Music Festival: From 21th March to 25th April 2020, daily concerts enable you to immerse yourself in the world of classical music.

Heidelberger Stückemarkt drama festival: The focus here is on modern theatrical works by young authors. From 24th April to 3th May 2020, up-and-coming talents from the world of theater will be in Heidelberg to present their works to a broader public.

Queer Festival Heidelberg: Germany's first international Queer-Festival will be held in May 2020. For an entire month concerts, club nights, films, exhibitions, theaters and workshops will deal with the subject of sexual or gender diversity and discrimination.

Alternativer Frühling is the name of the urban spring festival for music and popular culture in April and May. Artists and organizers are given a platform to express bohemian and experimental culture. The festival offers concerts, workshops and parties, as well as exhibitions and art performances.

Summer festivals

Heidelberger Literaturtage: From 24th to 28th June 2020 visitors have an opportunity to attend readings by international writers, interviews with authors and round table discussions in a Spiegeltent on University Square. 

Heidelberg Castle Festival (Schlossfestspiele): Between 22nd June and 4th August 2019 the picturesque castle ruins will once again provide the backdrop for a series of unforgettable theater, opera and concert productions.

METROPOLINK Festival: Modern artwork displayed throughout Heidelberg. Street art artists transform house facades into works of art. Workshops complement the program of the festival between 5th and 20th July 2019. Guided city tours are offered for visitors.

Autumn festivals

Literaturherbst Heidelberg'Experience reading' is this year's motto of the famous autumn literature event which will take place in September 2019. For three days, actors from Heidelberg and the surrounding area will be showing how diverse the literary work in the UNESCO city of literature truly is. The event is supported by the Office of Cultural Affairs.

22. Children's Drama Festival: The "Kulturfenster" invites you in October 2019. On four days, drama groups from all over Germany perform up to a dozen plays at the large circus tent on the Neckarwiese.

Enjoy Jazz: Since its premiere in 1999, this international jazz festival organized by the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region has developed into one of the leading events of its kind in Germany. In 2019 it will take place during October 2nd and November 16th. Jazz fans can look forward to concerts, workshops, films and much more.

Geist Heidelberg: The International Science Festival is specifically directed towards the general public and every year brings the top national and international researchers of their respective fields to Heidelberg. It takes place between October and December 2019 in the German American Institute (DAI) Heidelberg. Some of the main topics include The Future of the Ocean, Brain ResearchEpigeneticsthe Universe, and Digital Worlds.

French Week: Every year since 2006, the festival has enriched the cultural life of Heidelberg and Mannheim (since 2014). In 2019 it takes place from 11th to 20th October. With almost 80 events celebrating French and German culture, the French Week is a vivid example of Franco-German friendship.

Winter festivals in November/December

International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg: Exciting, promising, gifted - the Filmfestival offers talented filmmakers an inspiring environment and intruduces still unknown directors to the big stage. Every year 30 to 40 films are shown. In 2019, the festival will take place from 14th to 24th November.

"Denk.schön": Eleven cabaret artists, including Anka Zink, Max Uthoff, Andrea Bongers, Anny Hartmann and Thomas C. Breuer, will take the audience on a satirical journey. From October to December 2019.

Heidelberger Theatertage: the "Freie Theaterverein Heidelberg" along with the "Kulturhaus Karlstorbahnhof e.V." and the theater in the "Romanischer Keller" invite you to the "Heidelberg Drama Festival" between October and November 2019.
