International music festival "Heidelberger Frühling" in MERIAN's latest issue
"50 musical events, that are worth a journey" recommends Germany's most renowned travel magazine MERIAN in it's issue "opera and classical music festivals". One of the reccommendations is the classical music festival "Heidelberger Frühling". The article also highlights the "Internationales Liedzentrum Heidelberg", the theatre, the modernization of Heidelberg's "Stadthalle" und Heidelberg as travel destination.

Heidelberg offers a wide range of festivals to delight fans of music, theatre, film and literature.

Winter festivals in January/February

Winter in Schwetzingen: The popular baroque festival takes place from December 2020 to  January 2021.  As always, the "Rokoko Theater" of the Schwetzingen Castle provides a stylish setting for the festival. 

Carambolage: The cabaret festival in Heidelberg’s Karlstorbahnhof train station offers satirical cabaret, musical interludes and readings. In 2021 the festival will take place in January and February.

The Heidelberg String Quartett Festival takes place in January 2021 as a special highlight of the "Heidelberg Spring" International Music Festival. In addition to daily concerts, several workshops will be offered.

Spring festivals

"Biennale für Aktuelle Fotografie": Curated by invited photographic experts, the biennial Mannheim-Ludwigshafen-Heidelberg Photo Festival focuses on current international trends.The Festival will take place from February to April 2022. 

Heidelberger Frühling International Music Festival: Daily concerts enable you to immerse yourself in the world of classical music. In 2020, "Heidelberger Frühling" has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. 

Heidelberger Stückemarkt drama festival: The focus here is on modern theatrical works by young authors. Up-and-coming talents from the world of theater will be in Heidelberg to present their works to a broader public. In 2020, "Heidelberger Stückemarkt" has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. 

Queer Festival Heidelberg: Germany's first international Queer-Festival is characterized by concerts, club nights, films, exhibitions, theaters and workshops with the subject of sexual or gender diversity and discrimination. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the photo exhibition in may will take place online. Highlights of the Festival have been postponed to the second half of the year. 

Summer festivals

Heidelberger Literaturtage: Visitors have an opportunity to attend readings by international writers, interviews with authors and round table discussions in a Spiegeltent on University Square. In 2020, "Heidelberger Literaturtage" will take place online. From 24th June to 28th June, online-readings and livechats will be offered. 

Heidelberg Castle Festival (Schlossfestspiele): During the Heidelberg Castle Festival,  the picturesque castle ruins provide the backdrop for a series of unforgettable theater, opera and concert productions. In 2020, the festival has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. 

METROPOLINK Festival: Modern artwork displayed throughout Heidelberg. Street art artists transform house facades into works of art. Workshops complement the program of the festival from July 3rd to 17th. Guided city tours are offered for visitors.

ARTORT020: The "UnterwegsTheater" offers a free, contemporary dance program within the metropolitan area of Heidelberg in September 2020. Exceptional festival formats, "TANZInternational" and other projects will provide diverse entertainment for an enthusiastic dance audience.

Autumn festivals

Literaturherbst Heidelberg'Experience reading' is this year's motto of the famous autumn literature event which will take place from 17th September to 20th September. For three days, actors from Heidelberg and the surrounding area will be showing how diverse the literary work in the UNESCO city of literature truly is. The event is supported by the Office of Cultural Affairs.

24. Children's Drama Festival - "little heroes": The "Kulturfenster" invites you from 1st to 4th October 2020. On four days, drama groups from all over Germany perform up to a dozen plays at the large circus tent on the Neckarwiese.

Enjoy Jazz: Since its premiere in 1999, this international jazz festival organized by the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region has developed into one of the leading events of its kind in Germany. In 2020 it will take place from 2nd October to 14th November. Jazz fans can look forward to concerts, workshops, films and much more.

Geist Heidelberg: The International Science Festival is specifically directed towards the general public and every year brings the top national and international researchers of their respective fields to Heidelberg. It takes place between October and December 2020 in the German American Institute (DAI) Heidelberg. Some of the main topics include The Future of the Ocean, Brain ResearchEpigeneticsthe Universe, and Digital Worlds.

French Week: Every year since 2006, the festival has enriched the cultural life of Heidelberg and Mannheim (since 2014). In 2020 it takes place in October. With almost 80 events celebrating French and German culture, the French Week is a vivid example of Franco-German friendship.

Winter festivals in November/December

International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg: Exciting, promising, gifted - the Filmfestival offers talented filmmakers an inspiring environment and intruduces still unknown directors to the big stage. Every year 30 to 40 films are shown. In 2020, the festival will take place from 12th to 22th November.

Heidelberger Theatertage: The "Freie Theaterverein Heidelberg" along with the "Kulturhaus Karlstorbahnhof e.V." and the theater in the "Romanischer Keller" invite you to the "Heidelberg Drama Festival" from 28th October to 8th November 2020.
