2023 The state of Baden-Württemberg has honored the Pfaffengrunder Terrasse: The Bahnstadt-Freiraum receives the Baden-Württemberg landscape architecture award in the “Commercial, residential and working environment” category. This makes the Pfaffengrunder Terrasse, which is located in Bahnstadt-Mitte directly on Gadamerplatz, one of five award-winning projects in Baden-Württemberg. The jury praised the connection between square and park, which uses clear design means to create a new “green center” in the middle of the development with a view of the landscape. The space and its transitions are bordered by trees – as an avenue, frame and solitary. The jury found that the lawn in the middle of the square offers space for many uses. A water feature at the same level was added as an extension of the Langer Anger. A design was implemented that ensures barrier-free path connections, gives preference to pedestrians and cyclists, connects businesses to the square area and enables various leisure and event uses. Urban gardening is also integrated.

The landscape architecture prize honors creatively designed open spaces and landscape spaces in Baden-Württemberg. The jury is interdisciplinary and includes representatives from the fields of landscape architecture, architecture, urban planning and other professions. The patronage lies with the Ministry of Regional Development and Housing of Baden-Württemberg, Minister Nicole Razavi.

2023 On May 10, 2023, the city of Heidelberg received the "Leitstern Energieeffizienz" award from the state of Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart. Thekla Walker, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Energy Management, presented Heidelberg with a special prize in the "efficient and climate-friendly mobility" category in the state competition for urban and rural districts. The city of Heidelberg received the special award in the category "efficient and climate-friendly mobility" for three outstanding measures:
- "klimafreundlich mobil" ("climate-friendly mobility") promotion program, which encourages the municipality to switch to local public transport and cycling.
- Numerous offers under the motto "Clever unterwegs" ("Clever on the road"), in which children are introduced to sustainable mobility.
- Support program to help companies establish company mobility management.
The "Leitstern Energieeffizienz" (guiding star for energy efficiency) has been awarded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Energy Management for special efforts in the field of energy efficiency since 2014. The competition is a project of the state government's Advisory Council for Sustainable Development. It is implemented by the Baden-Württemberg Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research (ZSW) on behalf of the Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Energy Management.
2023 The city of Heidelberg received the "Cycling Improvement Award" at the world cycling summit "Velo-City 2023" of the European Cyclists' Federation (ECF) in Leipzig for its significant improvements in cycling. With awards in a total of four categories, the ECF recognized those cities in Europe that have made a special contribution to promoting cycling as a sustainable and healthy means of transport for all. For 40 percent of Heidelberg residents, bicycles are the most frequently used means of transportation on inner-city routes - and the trend is rising. Between the years 2021 and 2022, the number of public bicycle rentals also nearly doubled (2022: 325,165 rentals, 2021: 166,465 rentals).
The jury also praised the efforts of the city of Heidelberg to advance the traffic turnaround by investing in infrastructure and further increasing the number of cyclists. Such as the bicycle parking facilities, the program for more and safer bike lane connections, and the "Environmentally Friendly Mobile" funding program. Among other things, the city provides financial support for citizens to purchase bicycles, cargo bikes and cargo trailers.
"European Cyclists' Federation" (ECF) European Cyclists' Federation. The organizers of the world degree summit "Velo-City 2023" were ECF and the city of Leipzig.
2021 Heidelberg is the first city in Germany to be awarded the "Kur- und Heilwald" (spa and healing forest) certificate in accordance with PEFC standards. The globally recognized PEFC ("Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Systems") seal of quality was already awarded to Heidelberg twenty years ago for its sustainable forest management. In 2015, the certification as a "recreational forest" was added. This standard was extended to include "spa and healing forest".
The "Heilwald" certification refers to the forest area around the Heidelberg-Königstuhl rehabilitation clinic. The "Kurwald" certificate refers to the entire forest area of Heidelberg, which has already been designated as a "recreational forest". In the Heilwald, an active offer for preventive health care is to be further expanded, while the Kurwald is to provide a passive offer. This means that everyone can improve their own health there, for example on the Königstuhl walking route and at viewpoints to recharge their batteries. PEFC ("Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Systems") is the biggest institution for ensuring sustainable forest management through an independent certification system.
2021 Bahnstadt: At the "Yuanye Awards for Professionals 2020," a global competition aimed at architecture firms and students worldwide, Heidelberg receives a first prize in the Urban Design category. Heidelberg receives the award for the public space on Promenade and in Langer Anger. The jury saw reasons for the award in the respect of existing buildings and the environment, as well as in the integration of sustainability aspects and citizen interests. The competition is mainly organized and supported by universities and associations from the Asian region. In coordination with the city of Heidelberg, the architectural office Latz+Partner applied with the concept "Öffentlicher Raum Bahnstadt Heidelberg" (Public Space Bahnstadt Heidelberg).
2021 Bicycle Climate Test 2020: Heidelberg once again ranks among the most bicycle-friendly cities nationwide. Particularly positive aspects in Heidelberg were the supply of public rental bicycles, the bicycle transport on public transport, the many one-way streets open to cyclists, the good accessibility of the city center and that all generations ride bicycles.
