Auf den Punkt gebracht - 100 Years of Marie Marcks
Heidelberg is celebrating Marie Marcks (1922–2014), who would have turned 100 in August 2022.
The artist created her first works for the US Army in Heidelberg and later addressed US foreign policy and key social issues with her unmistakable artistic finesse.
With a sharp intellect, tireless curiosity and incisive insight, she observed society, politics and the issues of her time from a mocking distance, thus becoming an important chronicler of half a century of German history.
The speech bubbles in the form of friendly clouds, the characteristic gaunt figures with pointed noses, and the distinctive, energetic line work characterised her personal style, the subtlety and sharpness of which aptly reflect the contexts of her work.
The exhibition at the Mark Twain Centre uses relevant examples to highlight the key themes within Marcks’s body of work and, in the second part of the exhibition, seeks to explore in depth the personality of the artist, whose life story is not only closely linked to post-war German history – particularly German-American relations – but is just as multifaceted and inspiring as her magnificent caricatures.
