Health

Excellent care

Center of excellence in medicine. Heidelberg's international reputation is inseparably linked with the university and the Heidelberg University Hospital, which is one of Europe's leading centers for medical treatment and research. Both, local residents and patients from all over the world appreciate the excellent standard of medical care in Heidelberg. With far in excess of 30 clinics, the city has the highest density of doctors in the State of Baden-Württemberg.

Patients are guests in Heidelberg. In addition to medical treatment, patients from all corners of the earth are increasingly seeking accommodation and tourist offers for members of their families who accompany them to our attractive city. In order to meet the needs of this international clientele, the city's own marketing company and Heidelberg University Hospital have established a close partnership with the city’s hoteliers.

Heidelberg has a long tradition of health promotion. As long ago as 1991, Heidelberg joined Germany's Network of Healthy Cities that had been proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Annual events, such as the series of lectures entitled Health Forum or the car-free riverside festival "Living Neckar" are examples of the activities of the city's health promotion department, as is the Rhein-Neckar Municipal Health Conference.

Prevention is the best medicine. Even for young children, topics such as healthy nutrition and addiction prevention are everyday subjects at kindergarten and school in Heidelberg. Since 1995, the youth welfare department has been running addiction-prevention projects in Heidelberg's schools in collaboration with the municipal drug addiction counseling department. A drug addiction consultant coordinates the city's prevention network. For women who are affected by domestic violence, the project GUIDE4YOU aims to simplify access to help for affected women from Heidelberg and the Rhine-Neckar region, in particular in the acute phase following an assault, and to support them according to their individual needs.
